When I bought my first-ever aquarium fish, I did not know what was the name and what kind of fish are they. The aquarium shop owner told me it was a balloon fish. Immediately after coming back from home, I inquired on the net what kind of fish I got. Then from there, I knew that Jack and Jill, the name of my first pair of fish, are actually molly fish, a balloon molly fish particularly.
Molly has different kinds of variety. The names usually describe their appearance. My first fish have bellies like pot and balloon. They are short and chubby. Maybe for these reasons they are called balloon molly.
The Balloon Molly is a hybrid variation of Poecilia latipinna, the Sailfin Molly. The Balloon Molly has an arched back and a rounded, large belly. Color varieties include a combination of black, yellow, and white.
My first mollies were white (Jill) and black (Jack). Unfortunately, after Jill gave birth, she passed away, and then after several weeks, Jack followed. However, these two balloon mollies were the start of my aquarium hobby which is now consisted of more than 10 varieties of fish and three aquariums.

Nice Balloon Molly Fish! I have 4 molly fish and 2 of them were yellow and the other 2 were black and white. My black molly fish gave birth to 20 little baby fry. Which I was surprize, but sadly my molly fish and my female betta fish ate them all. I didn’t even had a chance to get the babies out of the tank. I really love molly fish and betta fish. Did you get anymore fish?
Hi I have many varieties of fishes. When u see ur fish is pregnent you should separate her from her.In fact after giving birth u will have to separate mother and fry otherwise she may eat the fry,I had many fries many times and were able to make them survive, anyway best of lunck for the next time.
Thanks! So far none of my fish have gotton pregnent. I’ve been researching about what to do when a baby frys are born. How long does it take for a baby fry to mature enough to be place in with their parants?
It depends on what kind of fish breeding u r looking for.
In case of some fishes u cant separate the new fry from their parents, because they take care of their kids. But in case of Molly u have to separate the mother b4 giving birth and after giving birth u have to remove mother also.later for couple of months u will have to keep them in separate place.because they can’t fight with the elder fish and may not get proper food,I suggest u to keep them in separate aquarium as long as possible so that they will grow strong enough to fight with other for food.
Balloon mollies are bred to be deformed. They have curved spines and often have swimming issues and shortened lifespans. Yet another gruesome species created by the cruelty of man.
how do i tell if my ballon mollie is pregnant
the belly is bigger than usual, and you’ll just be surprised that there are fries swimming one day
